What to do on the Fourth Plinth?
June 23rd, 2009 · , art
I’ve been cycling and walking past it every day whilst working on my latest contract, so maybe that’s why I did it. maybe I thought I just wouldn’t get accepted. It’s not something I would normally do by any stretch, the very idea of public exposure on such a grand and obvious way gives me the jitters.
But now I have been accepted I’m in a bit of a panic - so what the hell am I going to do standing on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square for an hour?
Antony Gormley’s project One & Other is very appealing and will no doubt bring lots of attention during three and a bit months this summer, a kind of general public version of a David Blaine publicity stunt or perhaps a Britains Got Talent showcase confined to a small raised concrete block in central London.
However it is perceived, I applied on a whim and now find that towards the end of July (I’m not saying when yet, I’m still mulling it over!) I have an hour up there to do something.
- Do I put my art school hat back on and try and do something creative?
- Do I ignore the publicity and choose to simply enjoy the experience of standing/sitting/lying somewhere that will only be made accessible to a select 2400 people?
- Do I try to entertain, be political, cause a stir?
- Do I pass on the opportunity because now I have a place it seems kind of silly?
Some suggestions from friends have been:
- Give away signed photos of myself (thanks James)
- Go and do some dancing (thanks Rain)
- More dancing, but this time with tea and bsicuits (thanks Nathan
- Sell cider (well it is summer, thanks Adele)
- Anything beginning with B (it seems, thanks Giles)
- Or just leave an ‘out of office’ sign (thanks Nik) which at the moment is looking quite attractive
Thanks for all of those. I do have an idea, something that came to me on a sleepless night. It could work but might involve a bit too much organisation.
More on that another time. For now it seems others are a bit more focused on what they are going to do.
