“Will it catch on?”

The level of debate on climate change in the UK mainstream media is quite depressing. A feature on BBC Breakfast TV this morning went something like this:

“Here we have two lamps, one with a traditional lightbulb, the other with an energy efficient one. The Australians have banned the traditional ones don’t you know.”

“As you can see the energy efficient one takes a while to come on, and gives off a very different coloured light.”

“It’s a lot less warm looking isn’t it?”

“And they don’t work with dimmer switches…”

“Oh…”

“But if we all used them they would save 1.2million tonnes of CO2 emissions.”

“Do you think they’ll catch on?”

Admittedly this is a bit edited, and they did expand the feature later with a spokesperson from Friends of the Earth and someone from the builders council (I think, its early and I’m sleepy) but to have this ridiculously twee discussion about something so important is just mindblowingly dumb. And they idea of ‘they’ll catch on” when this is an issue that, yes, surprisingly, will affect too Mr Presenter, is incredible.
